Outdoor classroom – the yurt

The yurt brings children together in a round space that supports concentration and cooperation and invites creativity and open communication. Natural materials bring calm and ease. The yurt is ideal for teaching on the border between building and open air.

At Labyrint an outdoor classroom for technical subjects is taking shape in the form of a yurt, bringing a new dimension to our teaching. The aim is to strengthen pupils’ practical skills and prepare them for the job market to come, particularly in the sciences, technical fields and crafts.

At our school we place great value on being outdoors – ideally right out in nature. The outdoor environment lifts the mood of a class, releases tension and helps children concentrate better. Out there pupils meet varied situations and tasks that build their attention, cooperation and consideration for one another – values we see as central to their personal and social development.

The yurt provides the base needed for technical education and at the same time lets children spend time outdoors in any weather. The project brings together practical learning, time in nature and the development of important skills. It gives children room to grow in every direction.
