Investigating and exploring the ecosystem of the Edible Forest

The project produced the guide Investigating and exploring the ecosystem of the Edible Forest, which offers outdoor investigation lessons for primary schools. Pupils can discover soil animals, plants, fungi and composting. The lessons build practical investigative skills and join learning about nature with hands-on practice.

The project Investigating and exploring the ecosystem of the Edible Forest offers six outdoor investigation lessons for upper-school pupils, which can also be used flexibly in the lower school.

Each lesson combines subject aims with investigative tasks through which students gradually take on the individual steps of inquiry-based learning. The topics cover soil invertebrates, the non-living world, what plants need, soil fungi and composting.

The guide contains worksheets, appendices and photographs, and is rounded off by an account of a field investigation day run by the pupils themselves, which joins theoretical knowledge with practical discovery of nature.
